Who is Dee?
Hi! My name is Pao, better known as “Dee” online, and I’d like to share my story.
I was born in California, USA. My mom was pregnant with me while on vacation until baby me decided to GTFO.
I am the eldest of 3 siblings and I have 2 younger sisters. I would say we had a privileged childhood since we got to tour the world at an early age due to my dad’s job.
We moved around a lot when we were young and lived in various countries in South East Asia namely:
- Shanghai, China.
- Taipei, Taiwan
- Batangas, Philippines
As I grew up I really had a thing for video games as you can see.
Coming from an middle-class Asian family, I had 3 commandments to be successful in life:
- Do good in school to get good grades.
- Get good grades to get into good college.
- Go to college to get a high paying job.
The funny thing is that I was really bad at #1! I was FUCK’d.
I rarely studied and mainly got through exams through “stock knowledge” or common sense/deduction. Definitely not your model student right here. As I got into college(Computer Science) and it’s new found freedom, I skipped class a lot to play “Ragnarok Online” at computer hubs or what we call “Computer Shops” in the Philippines. College was uninteresting and too much work for something I wasn’t going to use at all in the future(Adv Algebra & Calculus)! In Ragnarok, I was a lvl 99 Mastersmith that was fully geared and best in the server. At that specific time, those were more of an accomplishment any degree could get me!
Eventually, it caught up to me and I had to drop out.
After a couple months of soul searching on what to do with my life I came to a conclusion that:
- I had no patience for traditional education.
- No job really excited me.
- I didn’t know what I wanted.
What did I really want?
Fast forward a couple of years and I finally got a degree in New Media, something that I was partially interested in and pretty unknown at that time. I started applying it right away into two blogs namely Deesign-a-day and where most of you know me from: “Dee’s Ragnarok Online Journal“. Dee’s RO Journal was basically a blog/website where I created guides, class builds and game journal entries about Ragnarok Online. Surprisingly it grew a huge following through YouTube and Facebook even though it was a game created almost a decade ago. Life was great! I was able to attend gaming events and even invited to do play-testing.
Even though I was slowly earning more each day, money got tight really quick and the project had to be put on hold.
My then girlfriend, now wife, Joyce decided to move to the United States for greener pastures.
I did a couple of odd jobs and finally landed a job for a bank which paid us well enough to afford our own apartment. I finally got to experience what money could buy. I ate whatever I wanted to eat, do anything I wanted to do and games and gadgets began to stack up. I even finally put together my dream gaming setup!
Until one day I spoke to a customer.
We were doing some maintenance on his accounts and pleased by my efforts, he commended me for resolving the issue without pain. He then asked me a couple of questions.
“Do you like your job?” He asked.
“It has its benefits. We all have to eat don’t we?” I replied.
We both shared a laugh.
He told me that he worked this same job I was working right now and that he hated it so much.
“I hated waking up every morning to get to that job man. If I had stayed, It would have drove me insane.” He said.
“After I quit I started painting and selling paintings in the streets of New York. It was hard at first, and I barely made enough money. Until one tuesday morning, this agent saw my work and offered to try and sell it online. It sold the first day it was put up. I started to sell all my other ones and made my money back. I now have my own website and sell it directly from there!”
What came next woke me up.
“Bro, if you have a passion for something, do it! Money will follow.” I agreed.
“What are you passionate about?” He asked.
“live streaming video games” I said.
“Oh you mean like that YouTuber petey-pie(pewdiepie)?” he said.
“Kinda.” I replied.
“Well why aren’t you hustling to be him man. There is big money in YouTube.” he said.
“I know.” I replied.
“Life on earth is finite man. Keep hustling! Follow your passion and money will follow okay?” he said.
We both said our good byes and I sat there in my cubicle silent. Thinking what I have done with my life. I have all these games, gadgets & equipment ready at home that past me would have killed for! Gathering dust as my past self slowly dies with it. That not starving anymore artist was right! It is a viable profession now! With all the youtubers, livestreamers and even professional eSports atheletes making millions per tournament(Dota2 The International)! I might not be the next Pewdiepie, Sodapoppin or Team Wings but I can always be that same kid that loves playing video games and sharing it with the world!
It’s time to turn in my corporate job title for a much suiting cooler one.
